August

August

A Poem by Nicole Doherty

The month of August wreaked havoc on
The color and the feel of the rise at dawn so I'm
Writing a letter to someone that I don't know

You see it's hard to describe this pain of mine
As I sit in a daze and drink all this wine but I
Can tell you it's the worst that's seeped in my bones

Death came on us like a snake on the grass,
One close call, feet too long on broken glass and I
Can't comfort my mother who's been cracking late at night.

The good die young, it's easy to say as
We all remember what it's like to pray so we can
Try and find some sanity in the noise.

And I cry inside for a friend of mine
Who's life was altered in the blink of an eye by
Finding her sanity on the floor colder
than Arctic waters in the middle of December.

So I'm writing this letter,
To someone I can only hope knows life better than
God himself who's the author of our breaths.

And I wish I could explain how life has changed
How plans and timetables have been rearranged, but
It's said that time soothes the feeling of all wounds

That we can't see, that rise and fall with the moon
And I can only hope they go away soon because
The broken hearts that've been shattered by loss
Need comprehension, need some peace so I'm
Begging, begging to you oh please
Take pity on those who deal with grief because
It's the sharpest dagger to ever be put in our skin,
but we'll begin again.

So it goes...
But we'll begin again,
So it goes,
But we'll begin again.
