Fear is a very distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined. We can allow it to hold us firmly in its grips and make us its prisoner or we can deal with it by facing it and doing whatever it is that is causing us to fear anyway! Showing it who's boss makes us stronger and better able to deal with it. You have captured the word and the fear superbly in this poem, Dave. Thank you for sharing...

the wonderful thing about poetry is that you can glimpse into another's heart -- sometimes you see a kindred, other times you discover something new. i don't really feel fear, at least it's not something that holds me back. but i read this and can empathise with the persona, someone who hesitates where i would charge in guns blazing. for me, this is a poem where i was able to learn something, and i deeply appreciate that.
