Gibbous Moon

Gibbous Moon

A Poem by papaed
"

writing in a tight format. Looking at a Gibbous Fall moon over an old cemetery.

"

Know you gibbous moon, from dust you were hewn?

But o're earth’s deathly spirits you hold sway

Where shining marble monoliths are strewn

Strange things happen under the half-formed moon

Spirits shimmer, pop, and come out to play

Know you gibbous moon, from dust you were hewn?

Mortal flesh staggers and fights not to swoon

The hounds lean back, look up. and sadly bay

Where shining marble monoliths are strewn

The shrill cold wind plays its pitiful tune

Your silver beams penetrate the cloudy gray

Know you gibbous moon, from dust you were hewn?

Worn stone marking are mysterious runes

mark the beds where lonely sad spirits stay

Where shining marble monoliths are strewn

Hazy shadows rise from oily lagoons

And languid drift where wanton spirits lay

Know you gibbous moon, from dust you were hewn?

Where shining marble monoliths are strewn

Do I see a hint of Poe or Lovecraft in this? This scene that you crafted formed in my mind slowly at first, but then exploded into a complete and beautiful image. The fog rolling off moors, dancing at the bottom of ancient stones under the more ancient moon. Just fantastic

This has the same structure as my favorite poem: Dylan Thomas's "Do not go gentle into that good night".

Oh and don't they just happen under the half formed moon! Human's tidal clock when lunar tics come out to play. I adore your writing stye, a joy to read, beautifully penned and well thought out. Thank you.

Dear papaed,

Glad to see you're back. And a wonderful poem, deeply lyrical as has already been commented upon. A magical topic as well mixing the romantic moon with runes and old Celtic rites. Beautiful.

Wonderful words. Greatly enjoyed.

Very best regards,

Rick

First I am SO excited to see you/read you again! and second - this piece is delicious. Highly lyrical. I can hear Loreena McKennitt singing it. Strong imagery tinged with mythos. SO NICE!
