Farwell My Concubine

Farwell My Concubine

A Poem by NotaBene
"

Inspiration from the Chinese cinema.

"

On a misty winter day, you walked through my door.

You gave me a frightened look as your chains slid on the floor.

I lost my breath as I gazed upon your stunning beauty.

Your Master pulled your arm and shoves you closer to me

."Here's a stunning wench" he said "just 2o pieces of silver"

"she's a trouble maker though I nearly had to kill her""

She can cook and clean, has other talents to,

but you can find that out when she's in bed with you"

I looked at your body, so slender and frail

.You hadst eaten in days, as far as I could tell"

20 pieces of Silver?" I asked " That's quite a steal."

I shook hands with the man as we finalized the deal.

He left us in my chamber all quiet and alone

As your gaze fell upon me I felt shivers in every bone.

You spoke slowly, I remember what you said

because to this day those words still ring out inside my head.

" Lord please forgive me for what i am about to do

,but I would rather be lashes a thousand times then lie in bed with you

.You picked up your chains made of Iron not of  lead

swung them around the room and aimed them towards my head.

Your chains then hit my now scarred face

.I told you right then you were about to learn your place

.I told my guard to come and to tie you down

then to put a cloth in your mouth so you couldn't make a sound

.Tears streamed down your face as the lash whipped your skin

.I told them thirty lashes so the message would sink in......

When it was over I laid you in my bed

.15 minutes later they told me you were dead

i couldn't believe i took your life,

a creature so worthy of being my fair wife.

i made sure your tombstone had letters very fine,

and that those letters spelled out " fair well my concubine"

An intriguing story and a nice twist on the cinema. Keep sharpening your golden pen, dear poet.
