Mother Tears

Ever since you came to me
I’ll never be the same
For everything I want for me
I wish you twice again

It’s my calling to protect you
I must teach you to how live
There is nothing bigger
Than the love I have to give

I will be there when you fall
I’ll comfort when you hurt
But what if love is not enough
To save you from yourself?

As I watch you grow it brings
Both happiness and tears
But beyond, unspoken things;
A dark and gripping fear

Have I given all I can
To teach you lessons well?
I know sometimes I screw it up,
Can’t save you from myself

I watch your sleeping face at night
Sometimes it makes me cry
Your innocence unspoiled:
The polarity of life

And out there in the world my dear
I hear such evil done
I wish there was a prayer to say
That you’d remain untouched

I know it in my heart
There’s only so much I can do
The life that I have given
Is my greatest gift to you

But baby if there’s anything
I just want you to know
I’ll always give my everything
Until I let you go

WOW! WOW! And WOW! This is a poem that knocks my socks off . . . rhyme & rhythm, a favorite for me, totally snapping . . . earnestness & depth of feeling, pulls the reader in & holds us tight! At almost 64, never having had kids & not being very involved in the life of any kids in the last decade, I often do not relate to poems about parenthood. But ANYONE could relate to this. You've put us so far into the shoes of how a mother thinks & feels, them tootsies are never coming up for air. You nailed the part about how a mom typically feels inadequate in mothering & also incapable of guiding the child & also trying to influence the world around him/her for the best. Despite the best efforts, so often a parent become estranged from his/her child & this is one of life's greatest tragedies, I can only imagine. Your writing transcend writing . . . this is total feeling immersion & the reader barely notices however you strung your words together (((HUGS)) Fondly, Margie
