The Canuck's Waltz

The Canuck's Waltz

A Poem by emipoemi

If you ask a Canuck from the east or the west
To say what makes Canada proud and unique,
They'll tell you the syrup they make is the best
With the passion they have for their country-

(Stretching from) Yukon through to Nova Scotia,
The Great White North harbours such wonder and glory!
From Charlottetown through to Vancouver-
From sea unto sea outlines Canada’s story!

When the sun starts to sets, you'll fall into their ways
Relaxed with a Mickey while watching ice hockey,
Adopting their after you’s, sorry’s, and eh
s
With the passion they have for their country-

(Stretching from) Yukon through to Nova Scotia,
The Great White North harbours such wonder and glory!
From Charlottetown through to Vancouver-
From sea unto sea outlines Canada’s story!

The summers are sultry, the winters are harsh,
But everyone’s steadfast and strong as a mountie
On tundra, on prairie, on mountain, or marsh
With the passion they have for their country-

(Stretching from) Yukon through to Nova Scotia,
The Great White North harbours such wonder and glory!
From Charlottetown through to Vancouver-
From sea unto sea outlines Canada’s story!

From Lake Winnipeg to Niagara Falls,
With fur pelts of beavers exchanged for a Loonie,
A bar in Nanaimo, bread in Montreal,
It’s the passion we have for our country-

(Stretching from) Yukon through to Nova Scotia,
The Great White North harbours such wonder and glory!
From Charlottetown through to Vancouver-
From sea unto sea outlines Canada’s story!
Charlottetown through to Vancouver-
From sea unto sea outlines Canada’s story!

Author's Note

emipoemi
I'm straying a bit from my original plan of going phase by phase of my poetic "career" in honour of Canada 150, and this is a recent collaboration I did with a friend of mine (whose verses are written in italics, and whose link is used as her credit). The tune is taken from Canadian folksong artist Wade Hemsworth's "The Log Driver's Waltz". Hope you enjoyed it.

Of course!
It was a lovely piece about your home and I love how it was kind of folksy or ballad like.

It was actually inspired (tune-wise) by a Canadian folksong called "The Logdriver's Waltz". So there.. read more

I would image the indigenous peoples in present day Canada (including the First Nations, Inuit and Métis) celebrated the occasion as a ‘Thanks Taking Day’! By the way – I was born in Kitchener, Ontario – so speak as a Canadian citizen – living in the UK!
