Free Will

Free Will

A Poem by Eponine Roy

I gave you my body, free and wild

Material passion toward the sky

Will I give you my soul, the last child?

Should I, I could, but why?

I've known you for but a little

The time we've spent has been dear

My fantasies, your wonder begin to whittle

Your name deep into my heart- with a leer

All of me wants to trust in you

Yet the rest of me knows I should not

For we've only met but once, it's true

That deciding fact shan't be forgot

Give you my soul? I won't do me the shame

For if I did, I would horridly lose at the game

This is a beautifully written sonnet. :)

The metaphor of the soul being a child - like the inner child. It's the narrator's last and she's grasping blindly for that childhood innocence; but the narrator is hesitant to let the past go into the hands of someone else. Free, wild, material, sky, trust, game... So many images of childhood!

The rhyme is a little sing-songy, but I think it works okay with this - considering the lost innocence of youth contrived here. :)

Excellent work again!
