guinea pigs and love equations

guinea pigs and love equations

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

guinea pigs and love equations

for you i was a simulated relationship

a trial run,

scientific experiment, so to speak

much margin for error either way

made you feel safe,

and then love trumped the formulaic theme

the numbers went out the window

with the breeze that blew out your comfortable candle

a flicker, then instability

i became matter that mattered

a test that couldn't be retaken

the pass/fail element composed itself

as empirical reality,

your stoic smile cracked,

the pen in your heart moved slightly

toward?

true or false

A or B

or C

or all of the above,

the lab filled with indecision,

your heart dissecting components of choice

as i waited,

probabilities on the table,

thinking forward and backward

all at once.

There's hardly a thing I dread more than realizing someone matters more to me than I intended for them to, but laying into it might be the best option for those things in the end.

thank you for your thoughts, wolfshrew...how you relate to this piece.

I guess most relationships are simulated until up against that inevitable wall of forever. Once forever enters the equation, people rethink the answer. It's a sad but true calling of being human.

thank you for your insightful comment, Linda Marie...yes and yes...

ok, ashamed to admit it, but in my youth I was through a few guinea pigs. I feel guilt now, especially to the one who considers me his first true love. Confession's over -- a relatable piece.
