Tick Tick Tick

Tick Tick Tick

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Tick Tick Tick

it's 9:21
the clock's hands
inching closer to midnight
and 9/11

another year of fear
another anniversary of smoke and flames
and tossed cocktails from windows of our souls
the silver winged devils finding their targets

the hearts of a country
the wavering flag
mile high offices of wealth
bombers of stealth

loathing
capitalism crumbling in the streets of fire
the world in dire straits
and getting deeper in debt

the kind that overdraws hate
when the account is in senseless bankruptcy
and the robbers wear blank masks
calling this havoc

just a day at the office.

The hate is misplaced, and the innocent are lost in the shuffle. In my lifetime, no single historical event has impacted me more, and the world, in general, with all the lasting repercussions.

so true...thank you, KL...

Oh this is all kinds of controversy but in a good way - we need to be cognizant of past mistakes, past horrific offences but we need to find healing...we can't live in fear or fear will concur - we need to stand strong, hang tight to hope and let faith guide us to everlasting healing - even in Canada - we remember the pain, we feel the loss but we pray for healing. My heart has been heavy today too.

yes, we must pray for healing and love...the violence and hatred is too powerful...

It's a conflicted day, and I think you've encapsulated all that in pitch-perfect tone. Well done, well remembered.

thank you, Kirsty....

Definitely a dark day, and it set the stage for an even more horrific future. such a tragedy...and to think that the very people put into offices designed to direct the insurance of national affairs, in such a crucial and extremely fragile and vulnerable time for many, saw only an opportunity to carry out some self-serving plan. Fast forward...see whats now, just another day at the office, fear and loathing as far as anyone wishes to see. Seeds upon seeds of planted years...just another day at the office. Jacob, a nicely layered piece here.

The horrific day we all remember....right up there with November 22, 1963! We all know where we were and with whom. Hate....there seems to be an endless supply of it in our world. A powerful remembrance of the day. Lydi**

thank you, my friend.

just a day at the office
the mundane meets the unthinkable
evil
and yet we return to the the mundane

and what if we actually lived
(not with fear as the motivator)
but thankful for
even things that are mundane

A sad, but acutely accurate depiction of the way the world is today.

The clock is indeed ticking jacob, but for how much longer?

The sad thing about 9/11. These people would love to live the American dream, even if we know it is a dream. Mind you, if North Korea get any bigger toys, 9/11 will be irrelevant.

Well, here it is, the 15th anniversary . . . your poem is much appreciated becuz of the LACK of anything predictable amongst the glut of tributes which are "same ole-same ole" . . . I especially love the way you've woven in a subtle glimpse of the loathing from which most terrorist attacks arise, as well as the fine word crafting: "silver-winged devils" . . . "capitalism crumbling" . . . "overdraws hate" . . .
