When the Mystery of Life Ends

When the Mystery of Life Ends

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

When the Mystery of Life Ends

goodnight Emma

he spoke softly,

lit the candle,

opened his book

and started to read his last rites

she kissed his cheek

and turned away in a cloud of unease

in restless arrangement

the moon and time shone through the blinds

a peek of light,

a ghostly voyeur...

goodnight Emma,

whispered softly in her ear

she smiled,

woke as the sun saluted solemnly

and she knew

she turned and saw the candle

burned to a little wax mound

much like the disturbance in a graveyard

the book fallen to the floor

his glasses in crooked farewell

goodnight Emma

she knew then,

she was his book mark,

and as she fell from his pages

his story had reached its conclusion.

dear Jacob... to be a Bookmark... is a delicate responsibility and a
privilege of great renown. A marker for continuing and to always be needed...
even for other Books. Perhaps embed with a gold cross and dried flowers
thereabout. A virtual rendition of a writers vocation....
the exact place where perhaps a kiss was expressed and a rose petal placed
with scented love and devotion. A keeper in memory and eventide. Amen

thank you for your very kind words, Pat,
j.
I knew things were going south when the guy started reading his last rites. Something a little Poelike in this offering which describes the last night of a marriage. Verse 3 is full of death symbols. The burning candle is symbolic of the passing of life, the fallen book and crooked glasses, too. Too late did the woman realize it. Well, no one gets out of this thing alive, do they? A haunting piece of work here, but not to be read if you're feeling depressed.

thank you for your kind review, John...not really sure where or why this one arrived.

Ah there is no joy in Emma as she lets him down and never really knew until too late just how much he cared. A pathos filled forlorn write Jacob.
