the flavor of Emily

the flavor of Emily

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the flavor of Emily

i'm imagining

Emily Dickinson with too much make-up

a tattoo of a book of poems

on her left arm

her hair in vicious curls

sitting at her desk staring at a picture of Longfellow

wishful thinking

a queen in awe of her king

her quill moving at light speed

as her heart is racing

writing letters to her lovers

but first sending them to the colonel to proofread

just to make him feel he is pertinent to her life

i'm imagining

her imagining

the dead poets will rise again

passion will live on in her pen

long after she commits with tassels and coaches

to that funeral in her brain

i'm imagining

her looking out her window over the graveyard

praying for friends who passed from consumption

even though she believes not, in a real God

i'm imagining

her waiting for a date,

who will never arrive

i'm imagining

her writing another letter

to Whom it may concern

professing love

then signing it,

"sincerely yours,

         E. Dickinson"

Every word was carefully weighed and fitted into the reflexion scheme in terms of comparison, not easy to do in poetics; I thought it was brilliant.

thank you for your kind words, Gandre.

Your imaginings are of an appreciation and of a passion to this wonderful poet. The reader can feel your closeness to her in heart and spirit. Your lines have great authenticity that is with sincerity. She inspired the multitudes as you inspire others in modern times.

My heart skipped a beat to see Emily Dickinson's name in your poem! I think you have captured her so beautifully, poetry inked on her skin, heart racing in excitement of the world she created. I imagine too. I imagine her and others, and what they might have imagined whilst writing. I also think about what others might imagine reading my writing, as I'm sure they all did, and perhaps you wondered the same when you wrote this. Amazing world we live in isn't it, this world of poetry.

I'm imagining her sharing a bath with Gee after reading his poem last night. 😊 I'm assuming his poem was inspiration for yours. Both are a beautiful homage to a well-deserving poet who has touched so many lives. Poetry is a passion that takes up residence in the loneliest hearts.
