Required Contrition

Required Contrition

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Required Contrition

truant indulgence

passion skips class

wondrous naivety

backseat confessions

lovers learning on the run

clouded intimacy

pillow talk in the driver's seat

arms wrapped in conversation

regrets switched off like the porch light

what's whispered in the dark

is the unseen guilt

we don't read about in any textbook.

I wish we were not just shown the fairy tales and happy endings in the books in our early years, but also how overpowering the feelings of guilt, regret and the things which come with them can be; that no matter what we do some salvations can never be attained. I wish I had read this before. I always connect with your poems at a personal level.

we grow up thinking happy endings are the norm...but yes, they are not.

Seeking contrition and performing penance was--for me--just a formula for continuing to explore "sin." Being a technically "faithful" Catholic boy, no amount of "Our Fathers" and "Hail Marys" ever dissuaded me from seeking the next level of debauchery. Apparently, I saw regular trips to the confessional as having granted me permission to resume research.
Unfortunately, the guilt rarely subsided.
Great piece, Jacob!

i was much like you, Jimmy...
thanks for sharing and for the smile...

Your words are wonderfully reminiscent of youthful love and absence of caution.... I feel that there is no place for regrets and guilt in those formative years when one is still budding, learning on the run.

I am often amused though at how often I come across truancy, clouded intimacy, wondrous naivety and passion skipping class in mature, supposedly seasoned adults...

hey there Jacob.... your poem reminded me of the Bob Seger song "Night Moves" and "she was a black hair beauty"... "working on mysteries we had no clue", "trying to lose those awkward teenage blues"... anyway your poem took me back to my 58 Chevy and Amber, the woman I married and our back seat passions... "oh oh oh I remember, I remember, I remember..... making those night moves"...

I liked that "arms wrapped in conversation" line and I can't stop thinking, hummmmmm 'night moves'... maybe you should get Seger to put music to your poem... thanks Jacob for a journey to that old Chevy and to the woman I once loved

My first encounter with romance was
in 1956 with a preacher’s Son who took me on a date under the trees along Sligo Creek in his Vintage 🚘 Car. Bumps were furious and fully
covered, but always lingers in my mind. After graduation he went to
Las Vegas and has never been Heard of since💃💜! Amen truly🎭 Pat

especially appreciate the truancy and skipped class for indulgence and passion ..we can try our best at contrition .. and to change willingly it is required ... young love ... clouded intimacy and unseen guilt .. i have lots of memories i look back on and reminisce but i would never want to go back to that age ... so smartly stupid says i! ;) profound wisdom in your poem .. well said in my opinion ..i enjoy your poetry jacob ... indeed :)

Oh my, you took me on a retro journey, where I would make sure my hair looked all neat and tidy and my clothes were where they should before I knocked on the door to face the suspicious eyes of my Dad. Oh the guilt after the trips down the country lanes. Not for what I'd indulged in but because I had lied to my Dad about where I had been :)
