Scream

Scream

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Scream

penultimate fear to grasp

the monster in the closet appears in the day

under the cover of denial, we lie

everything is okay, just a bad dream

and yet,

why is this phantom not afraid of the light

why are we the ones under the bed

or hanging by a thread like frayed suits

tortured behind that invisible door,

tied to our selfish motives

hoarding the few smiles left

just before the breaths

become so hard to clasp.

The fear of dying is inherent in humankind because we process consequences more than other animals. We consider that we can control most outcomes....and those we cannot we either blame on or pray for divine intervention. We have to learn to balance our living with all other life around us....that means forsaking much of the self-gratification we hold so dear. Can we?.....mmmmm
Nice depiction, Jacob. P.

thank you, Pete...it is a dire situation.

In times of crisis, the true human nature emerges and it is not making sure others are safe unfortunately.
I hate to say it, but from what I see of the hoarding...toilet paper?...most people don't give a rat's a*s about their fellow citizens in this mess. Funny, my American relatives tell me the stores are running out of guns and ammo.

Is this serious...you betcha...is it the worst?...not by a long shot...
Can't help but think that all the major powers have been working on biological weapons for decades,,,is this one that got out?

Good one j. Stay safe friend.

Too many people are taking this pandemic with a grain of salt. Too many think the virus will not hurt them. Unfortunately, it is very real and while some of the news we see on TV makes it seem surreal, we are living through the nightmare. We all are in this together and hoarding supplies is both selfish and dangerous. Very well written, Jacob. Lydi**

J, I've thought about why so many are reluctant to accept the dangers of this virus. I keep coming back to the absence of a widespread national crisis in recent decades. The last time I remember this much nationwide impact was 9/11, and even then, I don't think most Americans worried about terrorists outside the major metro areas. Before then, we had Vietnam. And, for most under the age of about 65, it's just a war in a history book. Of course, the WWII generation knows struggle, and too few remain to tell their story.

So, I suppose this is the first trial of the century for many Americans. Until a few hundred die, I fear they'll continue to deny good advice and government orders, like beach closures and other things they've taken for granted. A long-winded way to say you're poem is a spot-on message I fear many will not acknowledge.

Oh my Jacob. You have summed up the current monster so well. He is no longer in the closet, he is everywhere, yet he can't be seen or heard. We are fearful and rightly so. These lines hit home hard. A gut punch if ever there was one. That should wake up the deniers. Brilliant topical write.
