Mom

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto
"

inspired by Thomas Fitzgerald's wonderful poem "Mammy"

"

Mom

final days,

your eyes darting around the room

in their silent womb

your pain we carried like the pregnancy

in which you carried us

our mouths stitched together in patchwork

family ties

coming unraveled

or perhaps there was never a knot

just a not

inflected

in love rejected

as you looked on with more sadness

than we were feeling at your demise

the room grew so cold

yet our world already had freezer burns

packaged hearts never sealed with each other

well-enough to survive

the tincture of frigid bleed

as your dreams of our reconciliation

shut their eyes with you

for the last time.

another wow.

i like how in the first paragraph you start it with uncapitalized letters. it starts the scene as if a whole unspoken backstory already exists then BAM...final days.

the second paragraph is like conflicting emotions because it seems like the family members are more concerned about themselves than the person dying. i volunteered in hospice for a brief second and that's true when people have family dying. it's hard to care about the dying person when their death affects the living!

paragraph three. my god, the writing! in my interpretation, it's like saying "why start relationships with each other now, just because our one common denominator is gone?!"

brutal. but beautiful writing. thank you for sharing, friend.

this one was not easy to write.

damn brother! I read somewhere this morning that the US death toll may reach 200,000. Each had a mother and I suppose a loving one. The thing is, we cant improve on lifes expectancy in a world where the inheritance of such dire truth stands before us. But I've sat where you've sat my friend. And for an instant , when they take their last breath, the air of assurance goes out of us also....dana

When alienated family members are alive, they blame each other; when one of them dies,
they blame themselves.
Such profound waste!

Yes, that is the shameful truth.
thank you, Jimmy,

I felt the frostiness in that room and can understand how difficult that must have been for your mom especially in her final hours. I have always had great relationships with my siblings. They have been an incredible support to me throughout my life. Sad poem, such an honest write Jacob.

As a famous philosopher once said...
we bring children into the world and before too long we
send them forth like arrows into the world... each child
having an exposure... perhaps different from the other.
Although they may remember us in various ways,
they have their own families. It is difficult at times to keep
family together when one is two thousand miles away.
We were only the Keeper for a time. truly, Pat

After losing my mother, I tend to avoid pieces that involve the subject, but this was worth the read. Your honesty hits like a kick in the stomach, it truly makes one reflect on their own relationships with those around them. Thank you.

Brutally sad write here. When siblings are not getting along, a mother always hopes they will reconcile. A mother wants to know her children will be happy when she is no longer around. Unfortunately, some reconciliations are not meant to be. "packaged hearts never sealed with each other" what a fantastic line this is! Watching someone you love pass is a horrible experience.....one we never quite overcome. Powerful write. Lydi**

You consistently pack a power of emotion into every line that has a tendency of getting stuck in my throat, whenever I attempt to read it out loud. Thank you for being that one constant in our lives, Jacob. The one thing we can rely on in times like these, today.
