Epidemic

Epidemic

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Epidemic

social distancing

we've been doing that to ourselves for years

as we hide behind our computer masks

technological facades

compartmentalize cyber touch

physical dangers of arms encircling

already out of the equation

soon we will run out of masks

and then we might happily

all die smiling

less than six feet apart.

thank you, Cassie,

Yes, there are some who have been practicing social distancing for years. Stuck behind the computer screen for far too many hours, making friendships online rather than in the real world. Great use of metaphor here Jacob. Maybe they will find it easier than some of us being restricted now to our homes?

I totally agree with you that computerization has distanced us from physical contact since the mid nineties, a mask, if you will. So this, in a sense, is nothing new. Clever use of the word mask, I like it!

I suppose social media does unite the world, but you still have to go down the pub to see how the real world is getting on. In saying that, the bars are closed, and we're all back on social media drinking photos of beer.

Hopefully not for to long.
Reading your poem I almost laughed at the irony of it all. Such is life sir. Never know what twist it shall take! Very hitting words.

"the renegade behind the mask
and even the mask, a renegade disguise"

from Leroi Jones' "A Song for Willie Best". So appropriate to mention this excerpt from a 60 year old poem considering todays climate. Everyone's hiding. You, me, the neighbor, even the man at Dollar Tree was unrecognizable behind his full face shield. It is the fear, not of the unknown, but of the unseen. Which is the worst fear of all.....great poem....dana.
