Fort

Fort

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Fort

panic,

like a snowball thrown

icy insides

feels like brick

when hit in the side of the mind

shivering,

anointing the new order

it's too cold,

shelter

and empty out the boots

warm your temperament

wrap your tears in a blanket

loss is inevitable

you are the survivor

the other side won

summer isn't that far off.

I made a big pot of Jambalaya which I used to share with my neighbors but they are locked down now just like us. At least it warms the insides. And I'm going outside every chance I get so the baby gets some sunshine and fresh air. I froze some of the jambalaya for later. My little girl eats the chicken, sausage and shrimp but says the rest is "yucky". She's not a fan of spicy food. :) I'm enjoying this Spring weather...in the sixties here today but dropping down in the thirties tonight.

For me, solitude is an old friend; I neither fear it nor resent it--unless, at some point, it is unreasonably
enforced by government.
Then, I shall become a conspicuous hermit.
Until that time, I, like everyone else, am holding the fort.
Another great work, J!

keep holding, Jimmy,
thank you for your words,
j.
I know this has a deeper meaning, but I felt cold while reading this haha. A really unique way of speaking emotion through storytelling within a poem. Thanks.

"the new order" .... always frightens me ... i remember the elder Bush using it as if everyone knew what he meant by it ... conspiracies thriving ... if my fort is impregnable ... i can keep shooting ... tho alone and boarded up inside ... not comforting ... ice hitting the side of me brain ...question is which gets frozen .. me science or me myths ;) the panic never based in reality says i ... we simply did not and do not know enough of the infection ... i see in your poem a bit of reality ... we have to get back to work ... our jobs ... our way of living and there will be deaths and more illness ... and i see already the plotting to make it an "issue" just as soon as our President says ... lets go ahead and get back to business ... the one thing that is big on my mind is how many were sick ... got over it ... and never knew what it was ... other than the flu ... i am guessing their are tens of thousands or more ... which would make covid 19 more like most other deadly illnesses ... the other question looming in me nog is ...who benefits from this "panic"?? "Fort" has got me going jacob .. and its only 2:45 am ... outside the thunder rolls for minutes and minutes ... only in the Ozarks where the Giants still bowl nine pins :)

your poems most always get me rollin' jacob .. thanks for sharing them
While this is relevant to the current crisis, this had my mind wandering to a scene from "Beau Geste"....where Gary Cooper wanders alone in a fort amongst all of the fallen. They have been defeated, yet the fort still stands and he is the lone survivor...so he uses their bodies to create the illusion that all is well in an attempt to fool the enemy. Its the way I feel we are living at present. Dwelling in our forts while the enemy is outside our doors and the fallen lie scattered in our societal ruins. I sure hope Summer isn't far off, J or at least the bugle call of the cavalry coming to our rescue. Such a timely write, this one. I hope you are staying well and manning the barricades. :))

Manning my own barricade, I imagine...

The new order. Imprisoned. Visits outside for essentials only. I can't tell you how that is making me feel at the moment. The scary part is how long is it going to go on for? I wonder whether I will ever feel safe again leaving home. I wonder how I will be with people, knowing that potentially they can kill.

that is definitely something to think about,
j.
When ill winds blow and Dahlias grow where
weeds have taken hold... we pray for summer
marigolds... where pansies play and and Lillies of the valley
lie in fields of renewed visions foretold as our world once again
will hold hands and sing across the oceans in joyful voices unafraid.
truly a lovely plan... Amen

This is a cold, scary time for us, a shivering one as we are tapped in fort like surroundings. some will survive the outside world, some not; I love the line "wrap your tears in a blanket" Until it is all over: hopefully by summer. This is a nice, appropriate piece Jacob. Well done

My pleasure!
we've turned our lives, our homes, even our responsibilities into a fort my friend. A confluent of syntactical lesions that run together in the same, impossible stream. Yes, the other side did win. We lost but in losing we have begun to believe in harmony. Imagine this Jacob: in our obedience to be compliant, we welcome all phone calls again. No looking at the caller id. No asking who it is on the other line. Just glad to hear your voice...dana

The state of mind and the lamp of hope that awaits a rescuer is finely depicted. Good work. Cha gaye tussi! 😃☺️
