standing ovation

standing ovation

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

standing ovation

i'm a poetic genius
i can rhyme
lime and chime
sour rings of a clock
my ship is coming to dock

a final rest ashore
i have to run to the rhyme store

i am out of them,
used up my supply
causing me to wonder why

i'm a poetic genius
but i can rhyme
for a dime

so chime in and write yours
we can be poetic geniuses on tour

sold out shows
poems wrapped in iambic bows

free verse crowds bewildered and crushed
soon my words will be hushed

my tongue cut out in scorn
my words pithy and worn

i'm a poetic genius
in my own mind
thus

i come to a close
should stick to prose

this poem i pose
as proof.

Among other things that excel in this poem, I like its hilarity. Rhyme though, out of fashion now, is a beautiful way to bring a life to your poem. So this contemporary trend of new formalism aims to bring back the good old rhyme. But also poetry, in totality is a very delightful form of art be it in free verse, rhyme or any other structure.

thank you for your kind review, Ayesha,

some of us just make it up as we go along,
rhyme a pathetic genius, just mark my words sir...

uncharacteristic maybe, but you make a great point as usual

thank you for your words, Neville,

You are a genius at making poetry out of almost any concept.
Despite your protestations to the contrary, your tongue-in-cheek piece
proves you can rhyme--though, for a dime and not always perfectly.
In whatever form, you consistently weave magic!

definitely not perfectly...:)))

I am thinking here, that rhyme has certainly made a come back. Advertisements are now in rhyme, you've got the rappers doing it. People are making money out if it :) That's how I started, although I have drifted alot. Every now and again, I just have to visit the rhyme store to get a fix. I enjoyed this poem Jacob. It's light hearted nature made me smile. And of course you ARE a poetic genius. No doubt there.

The only standing ovation I've ever received was for singing Don McLean's, American Pie, at a karaoke bar. I took the mic, left the monitor and sang it all the way through while walking the room and encouraging the crowd to sing along in the chorus. But of course, it's almost a nine minute song so they might have just been happy I was finished. (laughing) I love rhyme myself. I hate bad rhyme but I think the art form of making good rhyme is so very much maligned because of all the bad ones out there. I would rather write in free form or prose though than to force a rhyme simply for rhyming's sake.

i loved the poem, Jacob. i'm a fan of rhyme.
in fact, when i first came here that's all i did, because i thought that's what poetry was, and someone called me out on it. so i tried some not so rhyming poems. i've grown a lot and learned a lot in my years here

it's silly for sure but I like silly
what a witty poem... "i have to run to the rhyme store" "i'm a poetic genius in my own mind thus" "so chime in and write yours
we can be poetic geniuses on tour".....i love it!

i was reading a 19-year-old's poem a day or so ago, who stated that he/she wanted people to review his/ her poems with complete honesty.
they were ok poems, but full of spelling & words running together mistakes.
well i wrote my own comments, & then read another couple of comments for different poems both which gave excellent poetic advice (which i learned from myself.)
a day later i went back to re-read those other couple of excellent advice comments 'cos they were so good &.... he /she had deleted them !!
so i checked on the short poem i commented on & as i mentioned above, there were no less than 17 writing mistakes including the poem title. but everything had been deleted - the poem & my comments.
i'm guessing he /she didn't really want honest reviewing.....unbelievable!
probably considered him/herself as a "poetic genius" . i admit to valuing people's advice, even if i choose not to act on the advice at times.

not a problem
I don't always have the time
to write two words and make them rhyme
but if there's a gentle hill to climb
outside, that would be sublime.

Poetic Genesis surely must exist
to explain this funny little twist
and the pen I clutch in a grimy fist
can only come across as bliss.

So much for that.
