A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto
"

somehow reading Jon Roggie's wonderful piece called "My name is" inspired this...

i think i want to be a very famous poet

who never actually wrote one line

or even one word of verse

i want to be a name

just a name

whose autobiography

speaks of several books yet to be written

poems yet to come to mind from

where imagination leaks through a sieve

i don't mind being a fraud

have an audience awed

at my lack of talent

they will shout my name

to the rafters and wonder why

this guy

thinks he's a poet

when he doesn't speak one poetic word

just clears his throat

closes his notes

and bows to the audience

hoping the lighters will spark

asking for an encore.

These days it is very easy to tell the frauds from the poets! Art is for art's sake! when it becomes anything else, art for ...'s sake, the artist sells his/her soul to the ...

thank you for your words,

This reminds me of a skit. You have a musical ensemble preparing to perform. Guitarist takes their time tuning while the rest patiently twiddle their thumbs. Music starts, and during a climactic moment the guitarist plays one note. Job is done. Pack up the instrument, and walk off the stage.
You might be on to me, jacob!

I think that’d be an awful thing, J. Of course, same for you, I assume. Not sure who you had in mind here. I was thinking of an Instagram “poet” who’s sold millions of books in dozens of countries. I read one book and didn’t find a poem. But, then, I come here every night, looking for an audience.
So, it makes me wonder if the audience get what it wants, does it matter what it’s called? I say it does.

I recall a feud years ago between Alan Jackson and Faith Hill about “real country” music. Seems everyone won. They got rich. The audience got the music they wanted, and the TV networks and radio stations sold more ads.

I suppose the individual reader ultimately decides what’s what and who’s worth listening to. But, who am I? :)

A very fascinating poem this is. Speaks to me of a great writer who never wrote a book. Perhaps he couldn't or for some reasons wouldn't. Yet he always intends to. Maybe, it's his dream. There are so many things this poem made me think of. Loved it.

Poetry is in your thoughts. The poet often hides in the shadows; he or she is concentrated on the silence of his or her words. It is an interesting poem that moves us to question ourselves.

thank you for your insightful words, Heider,

Are we not all poets just frauds . Still repeating same themes what was done long before we start to learn write and think. At some way poetry itself start losing poetic voice. We want to be more authentic so we chose follow path of dirty realist . Maybe Black mountains poets too etc. But real poet create real picture of life from dreams and symbols of fallen petals on auburn hair of lonely maiden. Or at least i believe this is poetry. I like your critical voice with soft landing at our minds and hearts. We should more listen and less to write or at least write like a you. I enjoyed.

thank you for your insights, and kind words, Poet.

I love the idea of being famous for a future promise. Great PR and a glittery home page that looks the part, with a coming soon draped over it and some well chosen photos of a moodily lit poet, contemplating how long he can get away with the charade, as the adoring public wait for his words like hysterical beatles fans.
But I'd be careful where you post this Jacob, some rascal may see this and think it could work in politics too 😀

Actually, I meant writers block. But the same holds true for both kinds of blocks.
