the other place setting

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the other place setting

sleeping crudely

immersed in chicanery

I dream I am touching you

under the table

then wake,

sipping on my hangover

noticing I am embracing

the air that once held your scent

but your chair is empty

and still hungry...

I spill my drink

on an empty stomach

and an emptier heart.

When you take aim at the heart, you never miss. Oh, how this spoke to me. It's almost hypnotic...so beautifully composed, line for line.

The trickery of love...
a meal meant for two has
suddenly become a no-show
with crumbs scattered about...
an empty heart with a murmur...
a "show stopper". truly, Pat

Yes, romantic love does have its tender moments. After dwelling on this one for a while, I think the guys in the monasteries might have been onto something after all.

thank you, John,

Real feeling of loss here Jacob. Missing her and that emptiness you have captured so well in your lines. Dreams can bring them back abd can actually make the situation worse in my opinion. Great write, relatable.

The way one processes the loss and emptiness here is just so sad....

I spill my drink
on an empty stomach
and an emptier heart.

Dreams can leave such a bitter after-taste.

The longing for love coming from the void.... Gosh it's so melancholic. Yes days are the time when dreams shatters... Nights still better....

You capture that moment, when we wake from a dream to confront our loss anew, powerfully and perfectly here, Jacob.
