Ornery Youth

Ornery Youth

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Ornery Youth

I am a prodigy

knew love at seven

a waitress up in the Green Mountains

I was shy, she was 18

breakfast was always better

because of her smile

and she had great legs

though I was too young to apprehend

but surely, I wanted to apprehend those dark eyes

and that luscious smile

for which I was too young to make mine

I always looked forward to the next meal of her

never really tasting the morsels

she set down in front of me

just daydreaming of being older

and the two of us running off the edge

of what for me at the time

was a very flat world

that might end when I became eight.

Hello Jacob and you are welcome.
Oh yes, when we are little we can't wait to grow up and experience more exciting things. I can clearly remember being six and telling myself that I would be twelve in another six years. Twelve was so very grown up. Love this tale of schoolboy crush and older woman. Lost your appetite for food while increasing it in other areas :) These days we want to slow down, a sure sign we are getting older by the minute :)

This is really cute. The innocence in a child's eyes as he yearns for time to work faster..

Yes that too!
When being older was longed for is soon replaced by wanting youth back again, but as you said, 8 was light years away to a 7 year old who thinks time stills when told to wait until tomorrow.
I remember a waitress once who to my young eyes should have been a supermodel/film star and of course only had eyes for me, in my 7 year old reality anyways.
I didn't know what the it I wanted was. but knew I wanted it to be her that showed me 😊
Obviously by the time I knew, she was like an old lady of at least 25 oh innocence, where did you go? 😊

This is precious! Makes me want to think of someone I was crushing on in such an innocent & invisible way, way back when! So relatable, your restaurant details make this vignette pop! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

we're in such a hurry to grow up. hormones can't be controlled. i'm guessing that after a while you didn't need a menu. must've been interesting watching her with the whipped cream in the cleavage of her mountain range... :)
