torn jeans

torn jeans

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

torn jeans

my mind is so blown

rhetoric in rags

patches of words

skyward bound

I am ruled by some heartless muse

I can't feel the meanings anymore

the writing is finding its own way to the page

without me

or with me

or in me

or from me

conduits with knots

in my stomach

as I hurl over the keys

maybe possessing a mind

isn't a prerequisite

I come empty headed

in application

for this poetic license thing

wild thing

mild thing

noth-thing

just a couple frayed patches

from an old rag who can no longer speak

on his own

or anyone else's own.

i totally get it.
I think you can still be creative even though your mind is blown, tattered like old jeans, because creativity can come from the spirit, the subconscious; we need a mind to learn , but a soul to create, also , next time, get another muse! Great thoughts!

Hi Jacob. This is so interesting to me. The notion of creating without actively using the mind, without necessarily having an intention or a direction. But isn't that what creativity is? The mind, our logic seeks to understand, but intuitive creation can't be understood. I don't think we're meant to understand it. However I totally feel this sense of dissonance - the creation is creating through you with no permission and no control. Is there not supposed to be some kind of agreement between body and mind? I think the mind seeks agreement but emotion is the wild thing that doesn't need permission. Either way, the words flow through you, making their way around the knots and birthing themselves whether you like it or not! :)

Hi Jacob, Your poem too is one on the art of creation, how sometimes we feel we're not in control of the words. "I am ruled by some heartless muse." So enjoyed the language play.

Jacob, this poem reminds me of a film I saw with Anthony Hopkins as the main lead. I can't remember the name. It might have been Chocky, where the ventriliquist's doll took over. Your muse needs to be reined in to give you some peace :))

And yet, the free flow ebbs and flows from your pen ever poignant as ever :) I think everyone hits a point where words become them and in that light, the words voice more than the mind behind them :)

I rarely have an idea when I start writing. I’m old school and still use a journal and paper. When I write I just start and something comes about somehow

To the Zen people, no-mind is highly desirable, for within that seemingly empty mental space lies the key to accomplishment. This is true for both martial arts and calligraphy. Why should poetry be different?

The frays and comfort of a broken in pair of "pre-loved" jeans always beat those starch like young whippersnappers any fool can have delivered before they're even ordered Jacob. And they have the cheek to call their delivery service "Prime!"
Keep pulling at those threads Jacob. 😊
