Another Mother on Welfare

Another Mother on Welfare

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Another Mother on Welfare

i used rhythm in my poem

but it got pregnant anyway

and baby words made no sense

but sounded cute

grown up themes never seem to fit

and i could never get the stanzas to sit

still and quit crying over lost loves

and painful presumptions

aborted verse always seemed too perverse

so i never opted to acquit

before term

just randomly threw terms into an alliterative belly

felt the child kick

and tried to make the best of it

even though my reckless scribblings

could never afford to support my past.

So clever is this poem. Describes so well the birthing process or otherwise of a poem and everything it entails. Had many aborted works but have also had quite a few successful deliveries. I have to say I like some of my babies more than others. What a wicked thing for a mother to say :) Relatable Jacob.

ha ha, yes, thank you, Chris.

quite the food stamp analogy. very clever way of describing the writing process. sounds better than a starving artist despite the hard labor pains. ready or not, from conception to birth, when it comes you just have to go with it, nurturing 'til it fully develops ... :)
