In the Room

In the Room

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

In the Room

silence, silence, silence

damned silence

her eyes moving about

I was not there to hear

but from afar

I was her pupil

and I heard

what she could no longer say

and noted it to my memory.

dear Jacob... I think of Roger's sister, Priscilla, who recently
passed... they were very close (his younger sister) and he called her "Baby".
I know they both knew the other was there ...at the end... She in Staten Island at her daughter's home;
and Roger in Virginia unable to make the trip. I feel what they both felt... and always will. She sent us
three oil paintings that were "Quaint" ... one of Spring, one of Autumn, and one of Winter... in the last three years. "Summer" is where she now lives with warm breezes and loved ones with "Halos". Your Poem
reminded me of being prepared for Heaven. truly, Pat

Hum....read a few times over. Could be taken so many ways, so many meanings. I'll take the little nugget I gleaned from this and save it as my own.

I really enjoy the simplicity of your pieces. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Seriana for making it your own, that is the idea.

I read this feeling as if the speaker is on the outside of a window, looking in on a loved one. Unable to hear or be close, but seeing enough to hear what needed to be said. Beautifully written!

So much said in so little. Such is the epitome of good story telling.

This sounds like an old teacher who at the time you probably didn't listen to, but through time you realised she was actually giving out good advice. Sad thing is, we're now giving out that advice.

Some say silence is golden, but some say it drives them crazy.... but there was meaning to this silence and her darting eyes.... maybe you ,as you remembered, was only one who could read her face., emotions..now a memory.
Best, B.

thank you for your insightful words, Betty,

And there is nothing worse than an awkward silence.... those darting eyes that can't stay still speak volumes themselves in their erratic movement. As they say, silence speaks louder than words and in this case every single word is a dagger to the heart. A poignant poem, Jacob. 💛

I appreciate your insightful review, Marina,

It's a curious thing about life that at times the only way to express what we feel is through a paradox (I was not there to hear.../...I heard) I guess it's because certain situations defy logic or reason, and the crux of the matter can only be comprehended with the heart.

Silence can speak volumes when unwanted and unwarranted. I can be heartbreaking and unnerving
