the clarinet played whimsical blues

in the smoke-filled club

as a poet ceded his wares

 

in musical dimension

and florid accompaniment 

bookmarks tossed in ashtrays

 

words floated

in perfect rings

until the fan dispersed

 

a hunger for meaning

as night shift aroma

of metaphor

 

swayed in the air

like sashaying hips.

Oh how I wish clubs were more like this and not filled with rap music...the scene of the smoke in the air, while old blues played in the background and poets thrived. This imagery was really enticing and striking. Short, sweet, and perfect. You are amazing as always...

Ah, you took me back to Ronnie Scott's jazz club in Soho. A place I used to frequent in my twenties. Plenty of clarinet and saxophones there. Loved the ambience, but the drinks cost an arm and a leg :) And the smoke got in my eyes. Thank you my friend for the nostalgia and happy new year:)

I was flooded with the image of Paul Thorn and his daughter Kit. They did a duet called, Joanie the Jehovah Witness Stripper where she plays a clarinet solo. I absolutely love Paul. This was so well crafted, as all your works are. I enjoyed the read. F.

thank you, Fabian...my clarinetist friend has been all over the world doing recitals and teaching clarinet...and he is kind of enough to take time to do our blues/poetry duets.
we have done PBS specials together and it is just tons of fun with him, he is so so good.
really livens up the poetry.

This is paying homage to my friend with whom I have done a duet since 1995---his clarinet, my words...we have enjoyed it immensely....and audiences seem to have as well...we even had our own half hour PBS special years ago...was fun.
always want to tap my feet to something...poetry works.

Three months later... I really enjoy reading your Poem again... it makes me laugh softly as the Clarinet plays Jazz... and you recite your poetry. It is almost Five am somewhere. Pat
