for a poet friend of mine

for a poet friend of mine

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

for a poet friend of mine

I met your friend Elizabeth the other day,

she told me of the Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point

and those Nightingales' with Bianca placed among them

and she told me how many ways she loved "thee"

probably not "me"

and how many flowers her beloved

had brought her,

and how loyal a companion you had been

that her words formed a bond

with your creative intuition

that you have loved her words

for longer than you could

assimilate them

into theme

and the dream of conversing

you have been nursing

longer than any flower has bloomed

within a lifetime...

I met her, yes indeed

she spoke highly of you, yes indeed

she would like to meet you someday, yes indeed

and she said there is a place where all beautiful poets

find peace, find each other

sit in the parlor, drink tea

and do a dance of syllabic splendor

share a few rhymes

a few sublime

intellections

and listen to the Nightingales

sing

just outside the window

of where dreams meet.

"just outside the window/of where dreams meet" - a lovely, poetic thought! I would love to be with my poetic heroes, drinking tea in some ether-world somewhere, although it would surely scare me stiff, and I would probably not speak a single word! But I would listen... oh yes, I would listen!

I would probably feel the same nerves...but it would be heaven. Thank you, Robert,

Yes she is! I hope so too :D
This is such a beautiful poem j. It would be so nice if we poets could get together over a cup of tea and discuss poetry. Maybe we should all read more of Elizabeth's work and then meet up. Thank you for this fine write. Temp

I believe you are writing to a deceased poet friend about a woman whom he never met (maybe in a dream) and who loved his words and desperately wanted to meet him....and you suggested a dreamy place where poets find peace and "share a few rhymes".....This is beautifully written and very ethereal...like all this is in a dream....
Best,
B.
