Totality of Life

Totality of Life

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Totality of Life

the sojourn continues

learning

has rest stops along the way

but destination unknown

at death,

Eden's gates will open

in welcome

or we will come hard upon

rusted locks

and barren landscape.

I'm hoping for those gates to open like the door at the supermarket. But I have to admit, I have days of belief and when watching what transpires in the world, days of doubts.

Message and word-choice, Excellent.
Life is a guessing game. My guess is there's neither Heaven nor Hell, just Nothing.

Wasn't it Stephen Hawking who said "Something from Nothing?" :)
I think this might just sum it up, albeit a bit of a grim delivery it still presents a philosophy at it's best. Nice one J!

Thank you, Corset, for your kind words,

It would be totally interesting to walk into the next phase of eternity or another variant of existence or even just to continue on another plane what was began when we first became. Good stuff j. It has stirred up many a thought and belief. Cheers, f.

Unfortunately, no one provided us with an itinerary. I sincerely hope Eden's gates will open at the end, but if the doorman is slithering on his belly, I may opt for the next best accommodations.

I hope the doorman isn't Frank Cannon.
thank you, John,

I personally liked the first three lines of this as they do speak of something I know personally...learning has rest stops but it never completely stops. The rest of the poem, I will not know until that time comes and it may not matter at that point...or it may. You never know. Very cool.

thank you for your kind words, will,

Why does one really care about their final destination if they are dead... If you've had a fulfilled life then death should be welcomed and wherever your body will lay is not really an issue, except for those who bury or burn you. I know you don't really believe there is a heaven or hell, it's not your style J. What matters is the quality of life you've left behind...." your sojourn"....nice write J.

Forgive my lack of the parameters of Christianity (which I greatly respect but do not exist within) but are there only two alternatives?
Sojourn is a lovely word. I made a little book once called Flights and Sojourns.
Learning is the key, isn't it? Heaven cannot be the answer to all questions because without questions, there is no life.
Have you ever written sonnets? I know the modern world prefers the pared down, clean work like yours, but you use words so beautifully, i want to see how they roll when you get fancy.

Another type of exodus all together....THE exodus. Of life and all that the world involves.
Brilliant beyond compare, in my opinion.
I love how so many of your poems have a Biblical undertone, being a somewhat avid reader and a big fan of the Bible like I am, I really enjoy that.

thank you, light....my early years, Catholic school...well it's in there, you know.

Who knows where we will end up? I like to think there is a hell especially for those who have harmed other people by their murdering ways. That would satisfy me. Heaven sounds wonderful and meeting up with loved ones again, sounds divine, but I do not have that sort of faith. Enjoyed the read J.
