Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Home Sweet Home

Illinois

land of taxed freedoms

of gas hikes over flat trails

a state of leaving residents

on to greener pastures

Illinois

Lincoln's land

a penny for one's thoughts

a massive motion of tollways

a windy city in its midst

cold fronts

and access to lake fronts

Illinois

my home

my displaced heart

paying tolls for feeling blue

a blue state

the state of me

Illinois.

Jacob,
Hmmm... I can think of very few things I don't love about Tennessee or Texas... Florida, though...

Home is sounding a bit bleak here. I rather like the image of home fires burning on the hearth and families sharing meals around the table or out camping, fishing and hiking together. But us hillbillies are a simple lot.

I miss how our family used to share meals....we always did.
Thanks, Fabian,

Man you could replace Illinois with Oregon and it would ring just as true, I feel for you...

Great write
I don't think you are the only one feeling this Jacob, although that is of no help to how you feel as a cog in the machine that used to run so smoothly, as life just happened around you but now get it crammed down your throat.
I was just reading a story on the BBC news site about protests in Northern virrginia about the amount of data centres popping into existence and how taxpayers are paying the cost not only with subsidies, but by the pollution they cause, all because of its proximity to Washington and the relatively affordable cost to business with cheap land deals.
Whoever would have thought people in a place with job worries would push back so aggressively against job creation, but at a cost to the environment.
Perhaps that shows we aren't as broken as we thought we were. Well not at least until the election results come through.
Those tolls do take a heavy price, don't they?

Somehow, I don't think the local chamber of commerce is going to use this one in its latest brochure.
