Love Like Blazing Cane Fields

I wrote this for Shaun.

You held me in a windy cane field,

and protected me from invisible fears.

When I cried about my future,

you calmed my raging tears.

 

After all these years of separation,

it felt like no time had passed.

And I loved you more every second,

even when I knew that it wouldn't last.

 

As I walked the line into adulthood,

you promised on your life to run with me

for as long as I wanted and needed you there;

when I said "forever", you simply agreed.

 

Our love was bittersweet from the start -

filled with infidelity and fights on the phone,

but after the pain and misunderstandings settled,

we brought out our mistakes to forgive and atone.

 

I promised that I'll always remember you,

so I'll remember you as the boy on my home shores

who danced right through the open door of my heart

as I tripped on the 'welcome' mat into yours.
