Theme For English 11

My own personal version of a Theme for English B. Note: The first five lines aren't my own, they are Langston Hughes "Theme For English B"

 

The instructor said,

Go home and write

a page tonight.

And let the page come out of you---

Then, it will be true.

 

But if it’s supposed to be true

Am I supposed to lie?

Because that’s what I do

Day in and day out; I lie

I lie to everyone around me

I do it because I don’t want to tell the truth

I’m someone who doesn’t like to be seen

I’d rather be heard with my words

My words from my stories, my poems, and my songs

The ones that I write all day long-oh wait!

 

Or maybe I’m really scared of everyone else

Not physically, just of what they all see

Am I the person who I think that I am?

Or is what I see in the mirror my only self

Just a mannequin of SueAnne standing

And looking me straight in the eyes

No, it can’t be true.

I’m not just who I see: I am me

I am who I am no matter who believes me

I may lie and write songs, but I am me

Oh, and did I mention that

My favorite number is seven?

 

And that’s the end of my page

I had this for an old English 11 Project, but I liked writing it because I had to be harshly truthful to and of myself. What do you think? (And please don't say I'm a horrible person...) :/
