The Public Excavation

The Public Excavation

A Poem by CC

I turned you into a punchline

But that’s never what you were supposed to be

That’s never what you were to me

Universe, take care of him please

Heal the pieces he wouldn’t let me see

Fill all the dark places he wouldn’t let me hold

I can’t protect him from himself

And I can’t protect him from what I’ll have to do

To get him out of me

I buried him so deep

I meant every word

He was the one I wanted to keep

And now I can’t pull him out intact

Without leaving an unbearable hole

So let me cut him up

Let me break him apart

In little chunks I can throw to the wind

Excavate in pieces so at the end

I can recognize myself

Even if I won’t be able to recognize him.
