The Fiend

The Fiend

A Poem by Zoya

~close your eyes
what do you see?~

I hear
a flaming arrow, fiend,
shot in the dark

It tears through the skies,
forcing the winds to surrender

aimed at something
alive and terrible
whose sonance I can't
quite decipher

~close your eyes again
what is it that you see?~

I feel numbness in my feet

but it seems as if
the frozen lake that
I'm standing on
is beginning to melt

and thank heavens
I know how to swim

~my boy, close your eyes
on the third gong
what do you see now?~

I smell
a new kind of spring
in the air

not the one which
owes its existence to the soil

but the one that blooms
in the ashes of
broken dreams

~no, no, naive soul
I seek the story that
your eyes are telling

close them, once and for all,
and tell me
what do you see?~

I know
what your ears
yearn to listen

but it's too dark, fiend,
for me to see darkness.

I haven't seen you around & I've been missing new poetry from you! Once again, I looked at your profile blurb: "seventeen and learning" . . . my mind is blown how you can spill such sophisticated poetry! You are mature way beyond your years, becuz of the way you see the world in your words. This poem could apply to the whole world recovering from a very bad covid year, or this could be the USA recovering from a very bad presidency during the last 4 years, or your message could describe someone after losing a beloved person & then getting up the gumption to look forward to living again. Or this could be about the coming of spring, a more literal interpretation. You write in such a unique way -- your sentiments sound like nobody else -- you paint with a lofty whimsy that makes your message feel both playful & deeply serious. I love the way your poem feels as if some new beginning is just starting into the tippy-toe uplift of better days. I hope you'll be posting more soon & feel free to RR becuz I love reading you! Happy New Year! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Thank you so much for the read and review. I really do appreciate:))
Nice to see you back Zoya. As Barley girl says, your writing is constantly improving. It is not surprising that this rose out of a year like the past one. I picture more a teacher than a fiend ... although some of my teachers could have been described as such. ;>}
The writing carries an underlying maturity that few can rival. Its a nice twist on the subject matter and understanding that the dark is what it is ... so dark even the darkness is not visible.

Well done. Looking forward to more.
Take care ... be safe.
