Last on that Land

Last on that Land

A Poem by Sarah

On another raid

To protect those who are afraid

Go in guns at the ready

Find the one who caused all the problems

And hopefully get out alive

Time stretches from hours to days to months

Soldier awaits his return

To be back holding her in his arms

Writes her a letter every night

Telling her its all going to be all right

Muscles wear thin

Testing the strain

In the black of night

Trying to rest

Hearing the screams

Hearing the land explode from its tight grip

Knowing this raid is the last counter attack

Everyone is wearing thin and many lives are lost

You jump into command

Give the orders to solders who withstand

The last strike under one flag in a foreign land

Hoping the carefully laid plans get all out alive

Hoping that the last of this war is over

Hoping to see that smile before the eyes close one last time

You jump out into the heavy smoke laden land

Fire at the enemy till dawn

Finally the war is over

You get to step down from command

Go home and see that smile

After Month's maybe years away

Glad to be going home

No more letters are needed to be written except for the last one

The one saying you're coming home
