Shooting Stars

Shooting Stars

A Poem by Petal

A million stars cover the night sky
Some wait ever so desperately to kiss the sun
But others enjoy the sky that they too illuminate
These stars fuel their own independence
Not relying on anything else except what inhabits them
Some stay still, burning vibrantly
Others are dying out
They have run their course and are now leaving the sky
But there are a few that are chosen
They are the ones that shoot across the sky

Are these stars running for something?
Maybe they are chasing something?
Are they late?
Or maybe, just maybe they have kissed the sun
Maybe they greeted the sun
These stars are filled with happiness
They ride across the night sky

However, they could be trying to escape
Escape what?
Their own death perhaps
Maybe these are the ones that still have fuel in their fire
Could they be just be searching to bring another soul happiness?
Humans do wish upon them
Maybe their purpose is to fulfill those wishes

Maybe those wishes don't come true
Maybe the shooting stars see them as too selfish
Maybe they only grant wishes to those who don't have a selfish wish
Those stars are the ones that love all
But if people make a selfish wish then it is not within their control

They are falling
Falling to the great unknown or maybe in someone's backyard
This universe is filled with vast, unknown things
So, maybe shooting stars aren't stars at all
Maybe they are the universe's way of saying 'Hello.'
Or maybe it's our neighboring aliens who are welcoming us
Maybe they are wondering why we don't say hello to them
They probably think of us as rude or ignorant

Or maybe they are the souls of the fallen
Maybe when we die we don't become angels
Maybe we don't become apart of the Earth
We don't become a fragmented memory
Maybe, just maybe we become shooting stars ourselves
Each time someone sees a shooting star it's a passed loved one
They are checking in on you
Sometimes you may not see the traveling soul
But the view that do should cry out of happiness
They shouldn't wish
They shouldn't just let it pass by
They should jump around and scream 'Hello, I miss you and love you!'
Because you never know

Even if they aren't a loved one
Say it anyways
Let that soul know, even if you don't know who it is
Let that shooting star know you love them

I enjoyed this piece. Doing your thinking through writing is almost always a cathartic and eye-opening experience. I feel like you could really refine it with added punctuation and more structure. Just a thought :)
