Poetic License

Poetic License

A Poem by Frieda P

Poetic license
             whatever does that mean?
  end up taking matters
                 into your own hands
do you need 3 forms of I.D.
150 mph and run with it
             does it take an instructor
to do 30 speeding laps
           around the WC
could there be
a hefty fine...
will you flip the bird?

Can anyone get away with it
and what's the fee?
it is like a purple polka dot tree
     wrapped around
               a cheeky monkey?
will it drive over
 your suspension of disbelief
will it offend your
 cherished book of rules
or is it just too school for cool?

From where I can see,
just write to your heart's content
there are no rules in poetry

There are no rules in this game...only the hearts' diktats. No cherished book of rules, no schools!

"does it take an instructor
to do 30 speeding laps
around the WC" - No way! Just take the plunge! Free style! :)

Good for you Frieda! If it's not from the soul, it's not poetry. Power to poets!

The problem with writing a lot as I well know, is your get the high of creativity without the actual quality of the poem, but I guess in the end it's a trade off of joy vs. what, the ideal poem? Which doesn't exist, so might as well wing it.

The fee of poetry I think is existential weariness. Unless you write for beauty alone, which would be quite dull.

I can sort of see your point.
Following rules defeats the purpose of an emotional write. It makes a writer too objective to recognize emotion. I didn't wanna do that. This poem is to the point. Hits close to home:)

Exactly! Thanks sweetie. :-)
Poetic license can take you anywhere.
But that doen't mean I'll read stream-of-consciousness rants.

Now that you mention it, there really should be a "behind the pen" test before they give those licenses out. Instead of testing for parallel parking, the instructors can check if the poet knows that substituting "ur" for "your" is going to cause a fatal collision. They hand those dang licenses out so recklessly. You don't even need to know how to read or write proper english anymore!

Honestly, just like a drivers license, a poetic license should be something you have to earn. I don't think it matters what a poet wants to write about or how they choose to write about it. But bad grammer just bad grammer.

Love the concept here, Frieda. Nice work.
