Real World

Real World

A Poem by gabiaimee
"

Here's to High School

"
Here's to Friday night lights and halftime kisses,
feeling misunderstood, like no one listens,
standardized testing and college admissions.
Here's to the good times.

Here's to orientation and the first day of school,
where freshmen will learn and seniors are cruel,
where it's great to be you, but it's better to be cool.
Here's to the scary times.

Here's to seven hours of homework and two hours of sleep,
although you're never alone in what you believe,
spend your life flipping burgers if you don't overachieve.
Here's to exhausting times.

Here's to multiple choice, essays, and fill in the blank,
taken with hands that are shaking and eyes that have sank.
He couldn't pass so he slept and he smoked and he drank.
Here's to frustrating times.

Here's to "I'm fine, just tired" when you're not alright,
sneaking texts in class when you fought all night
because your best friend kissed the guy you liked.
Here's to dramatic times.

Here's to the "real world" of panic attacks
where briefcases replace colourful backpacks
and constant perfection keeps you on track,
because this is the childhood we will never get back.

Here's to the last time.

I enjoyed the poem. Realistic view of the world.

Above lines are too true. I told my kids. Don't rush growing up. Best days of life is when life is easy. School and friendship. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

This is EXACTLY how I felt when I graduated high school. Very fond memories, and that nervousness for the new world that is to come. I still reminisce about high school, but we all must live our lives in the present instead of the past or the future. I absolutely loved this poem! It brought back so many great (and maybe not so great) memories. But hey, that's high school!
