Once Bitten

Once Bitten

A Poem by Mari' Emeraude

And suddenly you wonder why
I’m "once bitten twice shy"
when putting all my faith in guys
I’m vulnerable I guess

I sense your animosity;
it tends to gravitate to me
I don’t know why you’re mad at ME
I didn’t make this mess!

I just grew tired of your lies
and clinging to your alibis
our love was sure to go awry
when putting to the test

I’ve tried to find the good in you
and believe me I have wanted to
there’s nothing else that I can do
but say I tried my best.

I like the straightforward way of narration here. It's free of any unnecessary flair, is relatively brief, but manages to tell a story complete with characters, plot, conflict, and resolution.

As for the theme, it kills me to think how sometimes, despite our best effort, we just can't make a situation work.
