Labels and Boxes

Labels and Boxes

A Poem by Carmen Williams

Labels are handed out at a young age

Some aren’t very nice

Fat, ugly, idiot, loser

And some are meant in a good way

Pretty, nice, smart, cool

But all of these labels

They don’t do much good

People are messy and complicated

They don’t fit into neat little boxes

So instead of trying over and over to change

To cram ourselves into the boxes we’re given

Get rid of the box

Throw it away, burn it, whatever

Just get rid of it

Now, start from scratch

Design the you that you want

And no boxes this time
