Words

What is a word?
Random patterns of type?
Combinations of sound?

Why do they matter?
Who decided which were bad, which were good, and which were cool?
How do they have the power to rule our lives?

With words we can hurt.
A cruel word stings like the lash of a whip,
A cruel word can make a heart grow faint,
A cruel word can make the tear ducts flow, sprinkling the cheek with diamond drops.

With words we can love.
A loving word can make the heart flutter,
A loving word can make the stomach swoop,
A loving word can spark a kiss, tangible proof of a spiritual bond.

With words we can hate.
A hateful word can make others feel pain,
A hateful word can blind the speaker,
A hateful word can morph perception, change how a person looks through one’s eyes.

With words we can laugh.
A comic word can widen a smile,
A comic word can brighten a day,
A comic word can give personality, a boom, a chuckle, a cackle, a trill.

With words we can cry.
A sad word can scream our deepest regrets,
A sad word can let the dam of emotions break,
A sad word can break one’s heart, as memories flash by.

With words we can inspire.
An inspiring word can spark terrible wars,
An inspiring word can rally a people,
An inspiring word can stand strong, defending those who are weak.

With words our life has meaning.
A word is a window to a soul,
A word is the expression of emotion,
A word is the key to a dream.

Words can be:
Overpowering
Overwhelming
Beautiful
Terrible
Lifelines
Friends

They can be:
Spoken
Written
Thought

We’ll never understand the power of words.
Their power is unquestionable and woven into the very fabric of life.

Do these words,
Doors to my soul,
Have power over you?

A cruel word can make the tear ducts flow, sprinkling the cheek with diamond drops.

This is my favorite line, in a poem filled with vivid descriptions and images. I like the change of rhythm from "Words can be: Overpowering..." on to the end. I also like the concluding question; the poem challenges the reader to think! Nice work!
