Relaxed Hair is just Lazy Hair

Relaxed Hair is just Lazy Hair

A Poem by Taji Herbert
"

you always want what you dont have and then when you have it you want what is now gone! (i think i still want to add more to this)

"

My Natural

Unprocessed Hair

Can be called a lot of things

Thick hair

Tight curls

Coarse hair

Naps

My hair can be

Gelled down

Combed out

Twisted

Pinned up

Picked out

Braided

Hot combed

Blown out

Flat ironed

Crimped

And curled

Yet when all is said and done

It is back to its Natural state in just one wash

But sometimes maintenance

For My Natural

Unprocessed Hair

Can be too much

This maintenance can be

An arm tiring

Comb breaking

Time consuming calamity

A gift for some

A curse for others

And a conundrum for many

So I thought

“Why won’t my hair relax?”

Chill

Be malleable

Work with me

Despite my angst

My hair continued

On its rebellious path

It frizzed in humidity

Froed at the hint of water sports

Dried up due to sweat at the gym

“Why hast thou forsaken me?”

So determined to have submissive

Obedient hair

I relaxed it

Chemicals broke the disulfide bonds

Removing one of the sulfur

Generating a new more “relaxed” bond

It relaxed the bond that made

My Hair

Thick hair

Tight curls

Coarse hair

Naps

All possible

Now they were relaxed

Come to find out

Relaxed is just lazy

It doesn’t bounce back

It can’t retain curls

Braids don’t stay

Flat irons cause more damage

Don’t relax come back Natural Hair

I loved this... it is a simple expression of an all to common frustration. It is a combinations of thoughts that I have had at one time or another and it brought a smile to my face to see someone put a poetic spin on the complicated love/hate relationship that is Natural Hair.
Good Job!
