three generations of a disgraced finnish aristocratic family inflict brutality on those around them.
CHILDHOOD HOUR By Hinrik Gunnar Edvardsson A FOREST IN FINLAND. OUTSIDE A HUNTING LODGE IN THE 19TH CENTURY. Primos vailönenn steps out of the lodge with a gun over his shoulder as his guest walks behind him smoking a pipe. They mount horses as they go hunting and return as the sun starts to go down and step into the lodge, blood trailing behind their horses. THEY GO INTO THE DINING ROOM WHERE THEY MEET THE FIRST STORYTELLER, A SAMI SHAMAN WHO SITS DOWN ON THE FLOOR AS THEY SIT IN THEIR CHAIRS.
SAMI SHAMAN Who here is familar with birds? PRIMOS VAILÖNENN We all are, they are everywhere. SAMI SHAMAN Well then it is time for us to talk about the aviary. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN The aviary? SAMI SHAMAN It was a place out of the ordinary, truly it was unique in this world. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN Tell us then SAMI SHAMAN When I was a boy I lived in a village not far from here, many things were different and it was a simpler time. SAMI SHAMAN That was until he came, it was some Danish noblemam, Hans Christian Primos and his companion lean back and summon a servant to bring them more wine. SAMI SHAMAN He built himself a massive house on a hill, but the most noteworthy feature of it wasn’t its size, the house was little more than an oversized fishing hut, but attached to it was a massive glass dome wrought out of iridescent glass, no one noticed anything was amiss until the children stopped coming home at night. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN The children? SAMI SHAMAN Yes, the children, first it was one then two, before winter was over 11 children were gone. No one knew what was happening to them until the innkeeper found Hans Christian dressed in brightly colored velvets walking hand in hand with two young boys. He ran away when he saw the innkeeper. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN How long ago was this? SAMI SHAMAN Its been 40 years to the day. SAMI SHAMAN It turned out he had been taking the children to the aviary, promising them they would fly, they did in a manner of speaking, when they got to the dome he would push them from a ledge, they would either be swiped in midair by massive ravens he had been keeping, growing larger and larger every day on the meat of man. Or if the birds didn’t get to them they would meet a fate worse than death, it turns out Hans Christian had the needs of most men, and to satisfy them he had kept a woman in the hut next to the aviary. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN A woman? SAMI SHAMAN Yes, he had brought a woman from Povroskoye in Russia with him, this leads us to the discovery the village men made when they entered the aviary, whenever the woman was with child he would let the baby die of exposure in the woods, he would then come back for the body and hang them on little poles in the aviary, he would bring his wife/slave out on the ledge and sing, dance little children dance, Hans Christian your father is making the dance for you! PRIMOS VAILÖNENN Thats it really? A lunatic and a few birds. SAMI SHAMAN It gets worse, there is no creature more monstrous than a man who has let his morals scatter to the wind. In that same pit among the little corpses he kept another secret, one of the children had survived and his mother would return to feed him at dawn and dusk, sadly with only the knowledge of a madman on the ledge and the cackling of crows, the child was driven insane. He lived amongst the bones and the filth. The worst outcome one of Hans Christan's victims could have was to fall to the bottom, for then the creature would pull it into the dark of the pit, never to see daylight again. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN What became of the child? What happened to Hans Christian? SAMI SHAMAN When the men of the village got to his door, it took no time for them to discover the full depravity that had occurred, Hans fled but he was cornered on his ledge. I dont know what he was thinking be he threw himself off it, maybe he thought one of his birds would get to him, instead he fell. SAMI SHAMAN His son tore him limb from limb in the pit ,all that was left were velvet scraps and a necktie. Primos and his guest sit stoney-eyed ,they stand up and retire to their rooms. DAY NUMBER TWO Primos and his guest depart for another day’s hunt. In the evening they return to the dining room and sit down for the second story teller, who has come all the way from Mongolia. Primos and the guest sit down and settle in for the story. PRIMOS VAILÖNENN Begin MONGOLIAN MYSTIC The tale I present to you tonight comes from the invasion of your neighboor. The golden horde under Tamerlane had broken through into Russia, there was a great battle on the banks of the Volga, the Russians, however, lost and their princes were taken to the Mongol camp. The night began with feasting as the Mongols entertained them with flutes and harps, but here’s the thing in Mongol culture you are forbidden from shedding the blood of nobility, so what they did was they took the princes and put them under the floor. They kept dining and dancing while the princes were suffocated under the floor boards. DAY NUMBER 3 The men return from another day of hunting. They look even more exhausted than they did before. This time they meet a third story teller at the lodge by the name of Faust. They sit down and prepare for his story. FAUST It has been 100 years since the cradles of Hamlin became empty. There was a terrible famine and war had left the city and its women ravaged by both man and beast, the city dwellers prayed for many years, promising God that they would do anything for their children’s future. One bleak midwinter’s night the villagers left their church to find the skies roiling with thunder and rain. It was almost as if the heavens were trying to scream. They ran to their huts and cowered, afraid of what might be answering their prayer. The next day the morning dew fell, and the sun shone again, casting its light for all those to see. In the center of the city there stood an object that had not been there before, a massive white alabaster capstone. The city dwellers saw that in front of it someone had placed a basket of warm buttered rolls. Everyone ate well but when they were finished they all dreamt the same dream: a man in a rainbow-colored Arabic robe was telling them they needed to build a spire to the heavens to thank God. The men of the city labored with all of their effort, but they did not finish. Their children then labored after them until they too had grown old, building a spiral tower of the finest malachite and gold wire. Their children then continued the work of their fathers and grandfathers. The spire was not yet complete and this third generation cursed the heavens that had given them this task. One night black rain started to pour, staining the streets of Hamlin. In the morning they found a man in bright robes wandering the streets. He came before the city council and offered to finish the spire for them on the condition that he could make a small addition of his own at the top. The council agreed and the man got to work, he labored for a day and a night. When the spire was finished the city folk gathered around the spire and gazed in awe. Their saviour emerged from the spire. The man took up a mandolin as everyone watched. He began to pluck a tune as the children of Hamlin began to follow him up the stairs of the spire. The man’s robes began to darken and the children began to cry but they could not break his grasp on them. When they reached the top of the spire they saw the man’s addition to the top. Replacing a cross was a bronze sculpture of a massive head of a man with no eyes and ragged hair, his mouth open in a rictus of agony. The mandolinist gestured to the edge as the children one by one threw themselves from it. The screams of the city dwellers ringing through the air as children landed left and right. The mandolinist then threw himself from the spire turning into a murder of crows in midair. The spire shook and collapsed leaving the rubble of a ruined city behind in its wake. DAY NUMBER 4 Primos and his companion ride out of the lodge with their guns over their shoulders. They ride through the snow as their servants run behind them. Primos unslings an axe from his saddle and rides into the woods. Yelling is heard and Primos returns with a dead man slung over the back of his saddle.

A young grandpa Vailönenn runs hand in hand through a golden wheat field with a girl named kasja. They sit on the ground as grandpa Vailönenn hugs her. They talk about what they want to do with the future. She wants to be a singer and he wants to see the California coast. Kasja and grandpa run off to a treehouse where they carve their initials in the floor. The scene cuts to a few years later, they are both young teenagers fleeing from men in the woods. They flee into the treehouse where they hold each other tightly. The footsteps fade into the distance. Just when they think they are safe a soldiers ushanka becomes visible in the entrance. He yells in Russian as 4 others come up behind him. They enter the tree house as Vailönenn stands up and stands in front of Kasja. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN I won’t let them touch you. I promise. One of the Russian soldiers strikes Vailönenn in the head with the butt of his rifle. Vailönenn falls onto his back and slips in and out of consciousness. RUSSIAN OFFICER Wake up boy, your about to have your chance to be a man. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN What? RUSSIAN OFFICER Is she your girlfriend? GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN No she’s not. RUSSIAN OFFICER Well what do you do with a girl you like? GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN I don’t know He sobs while speaking. RUSSIAN OFFICER Bon appetit, the first time always sticks in your memory. When you’re older you’ll thank me. RUSSIAN OFFICER Just wait for Nikolai to finish. Grandpa Vailonnen turns and to his horror sees a Russian private raping Kasja in the snow underneath the tree house. The other two Russian soldiers are dancing a troika. Vailönenn is brought down from the tree house and made to take off his pants in front of Kasja. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN I won’t do it. RUSSIAN OFFICER You’re going to. He jabs Vailönenn in the buttocks with his bayonet. Vailönenn cries as he is forced to rape Kasja at gunpoint. When he is finished the soldiers give him vodka in a tin cup. The soldiers sing and dance and they drink and smoke and laugh while Vailönenn sits far away from the campfire and passes out. Vailönenn remains silent and takes a spoonfull of stew in his mouth. RUSSIAN OFFICER Ever eaten a girl out? GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN No The officer laughs heartily as his men all chuckle, RUSSIAN OFFICER Well you just did. Vailönenn looks around him. Kasja is nowhere to be seen. SALLI It's time for another one. SOFIA Thanks mommy this one’s starting to itch. SALLI Ok here it comes, new week, new you, right? Salli feels around Sofia’s cheek and pulls away two metal safety pins. She then grabs ahold of her chin and pulls. Sofia’s face slides away as her deformity is revealed. Instead of a face she has a rotting black mass of veins that trace around two blue eyes. Salli pulls the dead woman’s face from her pocket. It’s delicately folded like a parcel. She smooths it down over Sofia’s face and starts to sow it on. GRANDPA VAILÖNENN’S BEDROOM Grandpa Vailönenn has slipped into another dream. He’s running through the woods with a rifle in his hands. He and several other young Finnish men come across a few log cabins. After shooting and grenade throwing he slips into one of the cabins. Laying on the ground is the Russian officer. Vailönenn jabs him with the butt of his rifle. RUSSIAN OFFICER Please... GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN It's you isn’t it? RUSSIAN OFFICER Yes GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN You know this won’t be easy right? RUSSIAN OFFICER Thank you. Vailönenn steps outside and finds two planks, he ties them together and plants them within the ground, he comes back into the cabin and drags the officer out, he takes a tin cup from the cabin with him. He nails the officer to the cross and stabs him in the side with a bayonet. He then holds the cup to the officer’s side and asks one of his comrades over to him, he pours the cup of blood into the man’s mouth administering a mockery of the eucharist to his fellow soldiers as a Finnish officer looks on in horror. FINNISH OFFICER What have you become, I remember you as children playing in the snow, coming home to hug your mothers, fumbling around with what to say to girls you like, you are not this, please tell me you’re not this. Anything but this! GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN We are merely what we have been taught to be, dont give your children knives if you don’t want them to use them. FINNISH OFFICER Good God, Vailönenn you’re fifteen, there’s still hope... The Finnish officer raises his revolver and points it at Vailönenn who merely flashes a red smile at the officer. The officer raises his revolver to his head and pulls the trigger. Vailönenn walks over to his body and pulls off the officer’s boots. VAILÖNENN LIVING ROOM AAKE I’m going into town. SALLI All right. ICE SKATING RINK Aake goes to an ice skating rink after it’s closed. He walks in and removes his clothes. He presses his face to the ice and sinks into a moment of bliss. A male employee appears and starts to walk towards him. SKATING EMPLOYEE Sir are you all right? AAKE Emits a low growling sound that has a hint of a whimper in it. SKATING EMPLOYEE Sir? Aake turns to the employee and crouches like a gargoyle. He bounds after him on all fours and catches up to him, sinking his teeth into his leg. The employee then kicks Aake in the face causing him to whimper in pain. The employee runs out the door and gets into his car and speeds off leaving Aake naked and crying on the ice. POLICE STATION The skating employee runs into the police station and asks to see the sheriff. SHERIFF Jesus Christ you look like hell. SKATING EMPLOYEE I’ve been attacked, you have to arrest him. SHERIFF Arrest who? You look like you got bitten by a dog. SKATING EMPLOYEE It wasn’t a dog, but it sure acted like one. It’s Aake Vailönenn who did this to me. SHERIFF All right you go get that wound photographed. I’ll go and talk to Aake's father. I served with him in the winter war so he might respect me more than one of the younger officers. The sheriff leaves his office and goes up to another policeman, SHERIFF Hey Jaake! Come here. JAAKE What is it? SHERIFF Get three men and tell them to come with me to the Vailönenn house. JAAKE Oh, I know where that is. I think everyone we know has gone there to visit Salli. SHERIFF Forget about Salli and get a gun. The sheriff walks back into his office and grabs his coat. Meanwhile right outside the office Jaake makes a phone call. EXTERIOR OF THE VAILÖNENN HOUSE The police car arrives to find there is an angry mob on their way. Shotguns and flashlights are visible. VAILÖNENN LIVING ROOM Sophia and Salli sit on the couch while grandpa and Varlaan have a drink, just as Varlaan lights a cigarette a brick flies through the window. Sophia and Salli scream while Varlaan and grandpa stand up. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN Varlaan check the window! Varlaan runs over and checks the window to see the angry mob outside. He recognizes a few of them as Salli's clients. VARLAAN What the f**k? Grandpa Vailönenn runs and comes back with a rifle and a shotgun. He gives the shotgun to Varlaan and leans out the window. One of the villagers steps forward VILLAGER Give up the retard Vailönenn. We know he's in there. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN Don’t call him a retard. Aake’s my son and I’m sure he’s done nothing wrong VILLAGER Are you aware your son is an animal? He bit a man at the skating rink GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN I’m warning you all to leave. You can’t prove anything against Aake. VILLAGER My father still remembers the war Vailönenn, like father like son huh? One of the villagers throws a Molotov cocktail at the house. It goes through the window as the house begins to burn. GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN What the f**k was that for! He aims his rifle at the mob and pulls the trigger. Someone screams in pain GRANDPA VAILÖNNEN Salli take Sophia and run! Salli stands up and walks towards Sofia, but as she bends over to pick her up a gunshot rings out and Salli's forehead begins to bleed. She collapses on the floor as Sofia runs into the basement. Varlaan flees with the shotgun as grandpa Vailönenn starts to burn. He runs out the front of the house and wraps a villager in a death hug the villager catching fire as well. BURNT OUT VAILÖNENN HOME Two villagers walk through the ruined house, one of them opens a closet. The charred corpses of three young women fall out of the closet. VILLAGER 1 Jesus Christ VILLAGER NUMBER 2 Tell me about it,dad always said to stay away from them. Villager number 2 walks to a bedroom door. He opens it to see Sofia sitting on the bed, she raises her finger to her mouth. The villager closes the door without a word VILLAGER NUMBER 2 Lets go. VILLAGER 1 Sure this place gives me the creeps They leave. Sofia then crawls out of her room and walks to the corps of her mother. She lies down next to her and removes her face, nuzzling up to the body before she closes her eyes THE VAILÖNENN HUNTING LODGE We see lights in the windows of the old hunting lodge from the beginning, the door opens and Varlaan steps out with a cup of coffee and a bag in his hand. He kneels in the snow and takes a chunk of meat out of the bag. He puts it on the ground and walks back to the lodge. Aake comes out of the trees and runs away with the chunk of meat. Fin
