Paper and Ink

In my mind’s eye I see

A place where I long forever to be

And suddenly I’m there,

Alive and free,

As I step

Into the inky world of my own creation,

Held together by fine strands of concentration and

Characters burst forth in a flash of animation

And then I’m wandering with them through a papery wood,

Away from the strife of my everyday life,

Wishing and praying that if only I could

Stay and be like them,

Inspirational and strong, alive a thousand times

And here they all belong

And as the dragon’s song is sung over head

I watch in fascination as the characters bleed

Inky tears left behind

Although nothing is said

Then another appears to take over their place

With a new voice and with a new face.

The woods start to thicken

Things are changing for good

My heart starts to quicken

As the dell where I’m stood

Becomes infested with vines

That I cut

Reading

Reckless between

Lines

I’m racing forward with haste

Our breathing the same!

Until somebody distant starts calling my name

The world around me shatters and viciously splinters

Turning my summer into forever midwinters.

So I sit there alone waiting what feels like an age

Until once again I finally can turn over

The page.
