commuter day dreams

commuter day dreams

A Story by Christine

the women
in heals
arch their feet
walking
down
the platform

Achilles
vulnerability
stops
at their stilettos.

the men
in pin striped suits
make small talk
with the shoe shiner

Narcissus
reflections
stare back
at them.

the men
and women
have children at home

they pay
the baby sitters
handsomely

before
the women
get home
they call
to ask
what
the men want
for dinner

while the baby sitters
raid liquor cabinets,
neglect the children
when they want to play,
sleep with the husbands
who don't love their wives

the men
lace
their polished shoes
with guilt

the women
balance
their fantasies
on their stilettos

the kids
are lighting things
on fire
in the backyard
they're killing animals
with rocks

the makings
of serial killers
and naive baby sitters
who still get paid

they all sleep well at night

while I
have night terrors
during
the commute

You've got a lot better. That last stanza, holy s**t. This is great.
