Engraved (Haunting Memories)

Engraved (Haunting Memories)

A Poem by Stevo The POE-t

Your fingerprint seems to be embedded into my heart
Traces of you still exist there when my heart skips a beat
As if it's beating to a rhythm of your name

I believe somehow I consumed a part of you
And now that part of you is dying in my skin
The sun can no longer preserve your immortality in my memories

Here I sit on the ledge of insanity, pondering where do I go from here
Suddenly the wind grabs a hold of me and sets me on a path to find my place
As if there was something I was destined to find

I remember when I would turn to poetry and pour out my soul to it
As if it were the devil and I was making a deal with him
All just to get to spend one more moment with you, a moment in your smile

Love is a broken compass, blind, deaf, unable to ask for directions
Everywhere I look I see you even though it's been twenty years
Since the last time our bodies were entwined

Your DNA still resides in my poetry still to this day
Now I do believe to me you're better off as a memory
I spent these last twenty years rebuilding the walls around my heart

I'm not the same as I'll never be the same
You single handily destroyed every ounce of love I could ever give to someone
I'm nothing but a broken image, a walking zombie among society

I wish I could forget that you were ever a part of me
I wish I could forget the first time our lips met,
I wish I could forget the way you broke my heart

I wish I could forget the words you spoke to me the last time I saw you
"I can honestly say I never loved you and I regret you"
Those words still haunt me to this day, I sweat, shiver and shake from the nightmare

I fell for you hard as you're engraved into my skin
I need to learn how to lie to myself better
I need to convince myself that in reality I am fine, life's biggest lie of all

You've captured the emotions of a lost love in "Haunting Memories" so wonderfully that your words moved me deeply ...

This sent literal shivers down my spine; I've come to know so many people who have written about this specific circumstance but you've beautifully and perfectly described it. This is awesome. The wording, pattern, it's just awesome. Do you know when you write the first few stanzas, and they seem better than the rest? (Well, that could just be me.) Well, it was good all the way through. :)

Exquisite, Stevo! Very natural sounding as it's read; that makes it sound straight from the heart. Such anguish comes through. You've chosen your words and images well. Thanks for a fantastic read.

Your words clearly describe your emotional pain. Why is there always that one person we meet where we think their opinion, their words hold so much value (to us, alone) we empower them with the ability to slay us, to affect us for years to come. Are they that special, that full of wisdom that we should give them that power over us? How utterly foolish we are to let them rob us of the time and energy we lose by doing that. I know where you are coming from, but for our own selves, we must take back that power. We need it, only give it to the worthy if you give it at all. Lessons must be learned or we are doomed to repeat them...

Good to hear from you buddy! A remarkable description of the way empathy creates a one way communication ... as victim and devotee in a relationship. Its a way for handling controls of the rein over to the other person. You will need to take it back!
