Arctic Season'd Disguise

Arctic Season'd Disguise

A Poem by Jack...

Arctic Season’d Disguise

Winter breathes in sepia tones along a lonely two lane street

divided amongst the sweeping frozen dunes

now forced into shoulder’d amnesty

Street lights shiver in snow capped bonnets

while sidewalks sleep ‘neath blankets of flittering flakes

The air, frigidly crisp…moves of tiny chiffon sparkles dancing

Rooftops, plump and soft, show off their frosted padding

as evergreens find alabaster fingers tickling their branches

in chilled teasings and frozen dustings

Footprints once there are gone, covered and recovered again

all evidence of life is erased beneath pearl clouded skies

and faint outlines of distant thoughts

White on black stripes drape in glacial wanderings

spanning the slush of asphalt weavings

in straight line piercings across the wintry landscape

February reigns brutal, sub zero ponderings swirl

from high above the icebox wasteland, once brimming with color

now opaque in its arctic season’d disguise…

Your sweet poetry almost makes the winter sound blissful Jack, but expecting more of that stuff shortly. Still there is a story in every one of your poems, and this one was so different, took me on a pleasant journey albeit I needed snowpants! Love sepia, it always does it for me, such a warm hue. ;-)

It is so easy for me to relate to your work Jack...I literally feel right at home in this piece. It reminds me of how Winter leaves me prone to hypnosis as I stare out at a storm. I always find myself getting wrapped up in the patterns of the wind and snow. On a good day, I can find poetic images within the swirls, but I've never found any with the majestic beauty you've evoked here. A phenomenal piece my friend.

Winters so beautiful, so white and so cold....You capture it perfectly down to the slippery asphalt roads Jack. Wonderful descriptions of winter. Loved this read.

Thanks so very much Pryde.
Ugh.
Now, how am I to dance, all bundled up in a snow suit, with mittens and big heavy boots?
And your lovely winter wonderland calls for a graceful ballet...

You're welcome! :]
I enjoyed reading this, Jack. I like the strong action verbs: breathes, shiver, show off, drape, swirls, and reigns. Also, I'd give you an A+ on imagery and rhythm.

I also happen to love the subject very much. Lots of folks are complaining about the weather. Not me! I love the cold air, snow, and not-so-great driving conditions. Do you want to know why? BECAUSE I'M A TEACHER!!! I also love it because I hate hot, humid, and hazy Virginia summers.

Keep writing!
