You

You

A Poem by Jade Mayhew

It's hard to find the perfect words
To tell you how I feel
I know that life's been hard on you
I know your pain is real
You built up walls around your heart
Of brick and ice and steel
To let another woman in
Was a choice that seemed surreal

So you locked yourself away from love
To heal your broken soul
To let your heart recover from
Your last love's heavy toll
You took the time to find yourself
And regain your self-control
Along the way, your heart found me
I blinked, my heart, you stole

And for reasons I can't fathom
For logic I can't see
You let slowly down your borders
And you let your heart go free
The well-worn lock you kept on it
Returned to you its key
And of all you could have trusted,
You passed it on to me

So now I hold a precious gift,
One I'll keep so safe and sound
But by giving me your heart for keeps
To mine, yours now is bound
And my heart, it's racing wildly
And it seems I can't touch solid ground
We spent so long in the darkness
That we're scared of being found

And you're scared to fully let me in
You were guarded far too long
But the work you did to heal yourself
It made your torn heart strong
Your decisions made by trusting it
Are too pure to be wrong
It's only now that we've outrun the storm
We see where we belong

So today, your heart is safe with me
And tonight, tomorrow too
And I know you'll cradle mine with care
It's a trust I give to few
And I think although our roads are cracked
Apart, we always knew
That my heart is where your love belongs
And I belong with you
