A SUNDAY BRUNCH

A SUNDAY BRUNCH

A Poem by jeannemarie coulter

A SUNDAY BRUNCH

surrounded by other diners
and the busy blanket noise of the sunday brunch crowd
she is lonely
sitting in the café
gazing out at the huge windows
where the swirling waters are cresting  into noyo harbor
she sips her glass of cabernet
and ponders...
if we had unlimited vision
if we could see beyond the curvature of the pacific horizon
would i see someone sitting in a café
as lonely as me
would we raise our glasses in a salute of recognition
and share our cabernet, well aged cheddar
and sweet french rolls still warm from the oven...
could we speak with sign language
our eyes not quite seeping our loneliness out
could we share all of the mysteries of life
a long distance silent conversation
of love
of laughter
and hope and faith...
of not being alone even in a crowd.

I don't believe that there are many situations that play out quite as lonely as a person dining in a restaurant alone. When I see it I always have the urge to invite the person to join my table with my friends and loved ones. Your writing for this piece catches the mood and spirit of that diner alone, looking to the horizon and hoping for someone to join her. take care...an

A beautiful scenery create by the poetry. I like the thoughts and the good description. I did like the ending. Sometime a silence greeting create a better and less lonely meal. Thank you dear Poet for sharing the excellent poetry.

my thanks, fine lady, and sweet blessings, too
I have been that woman alone in a cafe or restaurant.
Once I sat next to a nice man who was also alone.
But that is rare. I like this one.

Jeannemarie,

I believe this piece is super good. I connected to this piece and understood the loneliness. How the person know they are lonely but doesn't want to be that way. I know each of us has felt this was before that is why I think it will connect to each reader that reads it. It also reminded me of the poem I wrote "Sideways Smiles" I can't remember if you read it or not but take a look if you have time and see if you agree.

And this is why I did takeout before I married instead of eating alone. It's a lonely experience, especially when you grow up where mealtimes are full of family and friends. Even at restaurants my family would invite people we knew to sit with us. College was a shock.
This tells a great story and highlights loneliness with hope.

What tender, bittersweet ponderings of the soul... in a moment seemingly common, a whole world awakens in your thoughts... and one lonely life is embraced and lifted. So beautiful.

a moment when we suspect there is that soul mate out there...that person who is a reflection of us---a mirror image...lonely, looking for someone to sit across the table---someone very near.
