corvid

corvid

A Poem by jcfrancis

corvid

overhead a crow may fly,

safely cloaked in midnight’s shade.

but glassy eyes, blind with need

or hurried by impatient speed

may vault past heaven and find himself

into regretful shadows fade.

and if this ebony avatar

did land upon your milky hand,

would such a creature be content

to live with such a swift descent

or leave you, ascending, your mouth filled with words

he would not understand.

but i, who trod on solid ground,

approaching slow, with modest pace,

bow my head and kneel with fear

to kiss a flower with my tears

look up again with knowledge that i

will recognize your face.

and still, the crow and i have much to share:

each lost for words and long for flight.

he and i want not to go.

he and i want you to know

of words whispered in solitude

then cast into the night.
