Love is Eternal

Love is Eternal

A Poem by jessfoundwonder

What she carries, there
In the pockets of her shoes
And that locket
That she stopped wearing last week
Because the chain snapped
The same day that
She said to me,
"I've always been scared of the world,
But I'll try to let them in."

It's a picture of someone
He's wearing a tie
And his eyes are black
He's smiling, though
And she can't let him go
She looks at her hands
And breathes like her lungs work
As well as her heart could
Before it all fell apart

She rides busses and bicycles
Into the winter
And smiles politely
When she orders dinner
At the fancy restaurant that
She had gone to with him
But across from her now
Sits a man that she met
For coffee yesterday, too

And he's smart
He reads F. Scott and Hemmingway
He says he can cook
He has a dog, Ross, and a hamster
That he hasn't named yet
And she'll kiss him goodnight
But then sleep alone
Because his face doesn't look enough
Like the man's that she keeps in the locket
That she doesn't wear
