10 O'Clock

10 O'Clock

A Poem by Jessica Jean

I forgot how quickly

Ten o’clock creeps about

First you’re dreaming and musing

Then it’s upon without a sound

And every late-goer knows

That before he can count

Eleven is swiftly here

Carrying midnight soon about

And then it is one

And you try to fall deep

Deep into dreaming

Deep into sleep

But that’s when thoughts rush in

As the mind tries to out

When you try hardest to suppress

But they always leak out

The obsessions by night

Live as thoughts during the day

Gathering scenarios and “ifs”

For at nighttime to play

A theatre of dreams

Acts about in my head

As I slumber safe in the audience

Safe in my bed

I think this is especially true in college when you have so many things to do and so many people to see. I know what you mean about having those thoughts rush in before dreaming; I often have the same thing happen to me before I go to sleep. As you show us though, dreamland is quite an exquisite theater when we finally reach it.

Yes!!
Love it! I found myself nodding and agreeing with everything as I read it. I love the flow and the rhyme scheme as well. Nice work!
