Religion Isn't Art, But Art Is Religion

I hear people say all the time
That religion has no relation to art
Your art can relate to your religion
But does it always have to?

 

I'm told time and again
Being who I am
The example
The Christian
The only things I should write
Should be full of happiness

 

That if I don't write about the love

Joy
Peace
That comes from loving Jesus

 

That I am
Unclean
Unworthy
Depressed

 

How can I write about things so sad
When I say I don't feel bad?
They ask
I can't really explain
But all I know is

This is how I entertain

 

Even though I'm not depressed
Even though I'm not upset
I have been in such a dark place at one time
Sad lines are the ones that rhyme

I am not naive

I see what goes around me
And if they think it's all happy
They have way more problems than me

I could be making up excuses
But I know that through writing
I am one God uses
And if they don't understand me
And condemn
I'll try my best
To disregard them
